Emerson, Arkansas
Emerson, Arkansas, population 359, is located in southwest Arkansas, only
6 miles from Louisiana, on U.S. Hwy 79. It's in Columbia County,
with the county seat, Magnolia, some 12 miles to the north.
Emerson derives its name from Reuben
Logan Emerson, an early settler of Columbia County, who was a teacher,
merchant, banker, owner of the newspaper The Columbia Banner, and state representative. In 1905, he
also founded
the city which today bears his name. In fact, Emerson celebrated
its 100th birthday February 8, 2005.
Major industries in the area are timber, bromine and
bromine-based products, and oil.
And each year since 1990, on the last Saturday of June,
Emerson hosts the PurpleHull Pea Festival & World Championship Rotary
Tiller Race. Beginning in 2002, the festival became a two-day event,
starting on Friday.
We hope you'll join us.
