What would you guess might have been the topic of discussion Thursday on
the nationally broadcast “Kiley & Booms” sports call-in show on the Fox
Sports Radio Network?
Tiger Woods being on the skids? No.
Cal Ripken’s retirement? Guess
again.
Garden tiller racing?
Yep. Garden tiller racing.
“They contacted us about two weeks ago, wanting to discuss the World
Championship Rotary Tiller Race,” said Bill Dailey, spokesman for the Emerson
PurpleHull Pea Festival. “So we
arranged a time, and they called about 3:30 Thursday and we talked on the air
about tiller racing for probably 10 minutes or more.”
The “Kiley & Booms” show, hosted by Kevin Kiley and Chuck Booms
from studios in Washington, DC, is carried on the Fox Sports Radio Network,
which consists of over 50 radio stations throughout the nation.
It has affiliates in most major markets, including Los Angeles, Seattle,
Dallas, and Washington, DC. It’s
carried in this area by KWKH, 1130 AM, in Shreveport.
“So from the Ventura Highway in California, to the Washington Beltway,
to the Pacific Northwest, folks were hearing about the sport of garden tiller
racing,” said Dailey.
During the ten-minute interview, various questions about the tiller race
and the PurpleHull Pea Festival were asked, according to Dailey.
“They were particularly interested in the Tiller Girls,” said Dailey.
“I think they’d seen their picture on our Web site.”
The Emerson PurpleHull Pea Festival and World Championship Rotary Tiller
Race will be Saturday, June 30. The
tiller race will begin at 3:30 p.m. For
more information, go to the festival’s Web site, www.purplehull.com, or call
(870) 547-2707.
