There was a time when a continually on-going game of dominoes was a common sight in our community. It's still played. But probably never again will it be played with the perseverance that was once shown at Mr. Connel Smith's store in the community of Plainfield, west of Emerson. These three photos were taken September 14, 1979. They show Mr. Connel (pronounced "Carnal"), Sam Dodson, Red Matthews and Lloyd Timmons deep in thought during a match. The identity of the person looking on is the subject of some heated debate. Some say it's Hugh Dodson; some say it's Walter Dumas. In any case, sadly, none of these domino warriors of yesterday are still alive. Our heartfelt thanks to Lamar Smith and everyone at Springhill Land & Timber for making this all possible through their sponsorship of this event. |
