WEAVER CONTINUES REIGN AS PEA SHELLING CHAMP
The
peas were tough to shell, and the output smaller, but Doeleta Weaver of Emerson
is still on top in the world of pea shelling.
Weaver once again won the World Cup PurpleHull Pea Shelling Competition at
the Emerson PurpleHull Pea Festival Saturday. It was her fifth time to take the
title, and the fourth in a row.
Weaver shelled seven and five-eights ounces of purple hull peas in five
minutes, well off her world record of 17 and three-quarters ounces set in 2007.
Contestants said this year’s peas were just tough to shell, and had fewer
peas in them.
For her efforts, Weaver won a purple martin bird house, courtesy of the
event’s sponsor, Lake Sue Nursery and Farm Supply.
