Perhaps the knack for cooking exceptional purple hull peas is genetic.
First and second place honors at Saturday’s Great PurpleHull Peas and Cornbread Cook Off were won by sisters.
Christine Snider of Springhill, Louisiana, won in the “Best Purple Hull Peas” category. Her sister, Brenda Samples of Emerson, took second.
The cook off is one of the feature events at the Emerson PurpleHull Pea Festival.
The competition consists of six categories: Best Purple Hull Peas, Best Cornbread, Best Original Recipe Using PurpleHull Peas, Best Cobbler, Best Salsa, and Best Condiment.
Though Snider won in the best peas division, her sister Brenda won in two other categories, Best Cobbler and Best Salsa.
Don Moore of Emerson won “Best Original Recipe Using Purple Hull Peas” with his “Purple Hull Pea Le Orange Self-Crusting Cobbler.”
Linda Miller of Emerson took second in the same category with her “Tex-Mex Purple Hull Pea Casserole,” while Christine Snider of Springhill took third with her “Purple Hull Pea Tomato Soup.”
Donnie Griffin of Emerson won for Best Cornbread, while Linda Miller of Emerson took first place in the Best Condiment category.
